In 1981, Bob Nave, a lay missionary in India for much of his life, teamed up with George Ewing and the late Emory Swanson, both recently retired food processing system engineers, to create CTI as an avenue for helping impoverished people help themselves. With their combined expertise, they worked on appropriate technologies to transfer to partner organizations in the developing world, starting with potato storage in India. From that beginning has grown an organization with a small staff, lots of volunteers, and many projects on three continents
